FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  Do I need to see my regular doctor before I schedule my appointment?

A:You can schedule your mammogram online before you see your regular doctor, however you must have a doctor's order -- referral -- at the time of your appointment. This referral can be faxed to our office by your provider or you can bring it with you to RAS on the day of your mammogram.

Q: How do I know if I'm at risk of developing Breast Cancer?

A: The National Cancer Institute recently designed a Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Tool to help women estimate their risk of developing invasive breast cancer. We recommend that you visit http://www.cancer.gov/bcrisktool/Default.aspx. We encourage you to discuss the results and your personal risk of breast cancer with your doctor. Please keep in mind that there are many factors that may also affect risk and are not accounted for by the tool.

Q: Will the doctor check my films while I'm at my appointment?

A: No. Not if you are having a screening mammogram;  studies show that the most accurate way for screening exams to be interpreted is by a radiologist reading them in an uninterupted block of time. However, if you are here for a diagnostic mammogram (meaning you came in with a symptom such as a lump or we called you back for more views), the radiologist will check your images while you are in the office.

Q: How long will it take for my doctor to get the results from my mammogram?

A: After our physician interprets the results of your exam, a report is sent to your physician. This process does not usually exceed 5 working days unless we have to wait for your previous exam from an outside facility.

Q: How will I get the results of my exam?

A: Your doctor will get a report from  us, usually within a week.  As required by law, we also will send you a letter that explains your results.  You should receive this letter within a month of your exam.
